THE multimillion-dollar expansion of Chirnside Park Shopping Centre will go ahead after winning approval from Yarra Ranges Council.
The two-storey redevelopment proposal lodged by GPT Group, who own the centre, includes 30 new stores, a second food court, open-air gardens, office space, medical centre, child care, playground, community space and a three-level carpark.
The planning application was previously deferred at a council meeting late last year, with the group asking for more time to work through traffic issues.
Chirnside Park Shopping Centre revamp delayed by traffic issues
Part of the permit conditions will see GPT Group review whether traffic and parking at and around the centre is working efficiently.
A date for the start of construction has not been announced.

Cr Richard Higgins said the redevelopment was well overdue and a great thing for the area.
“It will bring more jobs and more opportunities for work for young people,” Cr Higgins said.
“The centre has been well overdue for years and has been left behind by other major centres in the area.”
He said while some other shopping centre renovations in the area have been too big, the community would hopefully be happy with the size and the services of Chirnside Park Shopping Centre including childcare and doctors.
GPT Group development manager Stuart MacLeod-Smith said the company was delighted to win approval for the development.
“The proposed redevelopment of Chirnside Park will create a new vibrant precinct for the region that will include new public spaces, amenities and new retailers,” Mr MacLeod-Smith said.
“GPT is now progressing discussions with potential tenants for the planned expansion and is yet to make a final decision on the composition of the development.
“We expect to provide a further update on the planned expansion later this year.”
