Chirnside Park Kaufland site on Maroondah Highway up for sale near Dan Murphy’s

After making an abrupt end to its short-lived entry into the Aussie market, Kaufland has put several of its properties on the market. But what does this mean for sites like Chirnside Park?

It was supposed to be home to a new player in the retail market, but the empty space bought by Kaufland in Chirnside Park is back on the market.

The 3.91ha site is one of nine properties in Australia listed for sale by the corporate through industrial real estate agent Colliers International.

Earlier this year shovels were downed at the European supermarket sites across Melbourne after the retail giant pulled out of the Australian market, despite already hiring staff.

The other Victorian sites listed for sale are Dandenong, Epping, and Oakleigh South — which was going to include Kaufland’s head office.

Kaufland’s supermarket shop floor was tipped to be much larger than Coles or Woolworths, and include food and alcohol, as well as household and garden items.

The Chirnside Park property is being advertised as strategically positioned in the shopping precinct with the shopping centre and homemakers centres nearby.

The site neighbours the Eastridge bars and restaurant, Bunnings, Harvey Norman, Officeworks, JB HiFi and the Good Guys.

Mayor Richard Higgins said it was the perfect site for a major retailer.

“Anything that gives local employment a boost,” Cr Higgins said.

“It’s a shopping area and anything would be great.”

Chirnside Park has long been scarred by an abandoned development site, on the opposite side of Maroondah Highway, which was dropped by developer Lacola but remains an eyesore.

Expressions of Interest close for the Kaufland site close at 3pm tomorrow.
