The owner of a cavoodle puppy is calling for a “vicious” staffy to be put down, after it attacked his pet in a horrific incident near Ferntree Gully cemetery.
Simon Blackshaw was walking his four-month-old pup Bowie with his sister and her dog along Clematis Ave about 5.20pm on Tuesday, when the black staffy came hurtling towards them.
Mr Blackshaw said the staffy was being walked by two women in their 20s.
“As the (women) came out of the (cemetery) gate the staffy came sprinting towards us,” Mr Blackshaw said.
“As I was lifting Bowie up in the air to get him away the staffy jumped up and latched onto Bowie in its mouth and shook him around and onto the ground.
“It just took him to the ground like a stuffed toy.”
Mr Blackshaw jumped on the staffy and kicked the dog, trying to get it to release Bowie.
“I grazed my knees and ripped my pants; I turned into a crazy man,” he said.
“It was just caveman instinct to try and get the dog to release Bowie.
“It got to the point where I put my hand over its mouth to try and pull it open.
“I’m 90kg and just under 6ft; I’m not a small guy and I couldn’t even lift its jaw up.”
Mr Blackshaw said the two women with the dog were also kicking and screaming at it.
He said one of the women then said to the other ‘Put your fingers up its bum’ and once the woman did that the dog released Bowie.
It took off a decent sized piece of Bowie’s skin and fur in the attack.
Mr Blackshaw grabbed Bowie, jumped in his sister’s car and rushed him to the vet.
“It didn’t even register to get the (dog’s owners) details we went straight to Boronia Vet and they saw us pretty quickly there,’’ he said.
“The whole thing was just so traumatic I can’t even describe it.”

Bowie had surgery to repair the laceration on his back and is now recovering at home.
The total vet bill was $1363, but Bowie will also require ongoing check-ups.
Mr Blackshaw said he thought the tiny pup was going to die in the attack.
“I was talking to him, kissing him on the head in the car, just praying and hoping that he would make it through.”
Mr Blackshaw said he reported the incident to Knox Council and wanted to see the staffy put down.
“It’s a vicious dog that obviously needs to be put down.
“Imagine if that was a small child? It’s not a nice feeling knowing a dog like that is in the foothills of Ferntree Gully.”
Knox Council’s community laws team is investigating the incident and would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the alleged attack or could provide further information on 9298 8000.
