Boronia house fire: Orchard Ave explosion heard before blaze police believe is suspicious

A loud explosion was heard moments before a fire broke out at a vacant house in Boronia known to be used by squatters. And police are placing a guard at the burnt-out property.

A guard has been placed at the scene of a house fire following an explosion in Boronia.

More than 30 firefighters fought the blaze, which broke out at the Orchid Ave property about 11.15pm on September 14.

Victoria Police media officer Sergeant Julie-Anne Newman said significant damage was caused to the vacant home, and police are investigating whether it was lit under suspicious circumstances.

Sgt Newman said investigators were told a man was seen running from near the fire shortly after an explosion was heard coming from the property.

She said a crime scene had been set up and a guard placed on the property until fire investigators and detectives revisit the scene today.

More than 35 Fire Rescue Victoria and CFA firefighters attended the blaze after several calls were made to emergency services.

Fire Rescue Service communications controller Neil Fisher said the fire was contained to 30 per cent of the double-storey house.

“Fire- fighters in breathing apparatus worked quickly to knock the fire down declaring the fire under control at 11.21pm,” he said.

“It is believed there have been squatters on site at various times, a search of the premises found no occupants present.”

He was the cause of the fire had been deemed as suspicious.
