A laser cutting factory in Maroondah has become a Tier 1 coronavirus exposure site, with visitors and workers being told to get tested and isolate immediately.

The DHHS listed the Rapid Machining and Fabrication factory on Elsum Ave in Bayswater North to its list of exposure sites on Monday night, after a person with a positive case spent seven hours at the factory on August 5.

The business specialises in “designing, drafting and manufacturing all forms of sheet metal” according to its website.

Anyone who was at the factory between 1.30pm and 8.30pm on that day has been directed to get tested immediately and isolate for 14 days due to the exposure.

Rapid Machining and Fabrication director Shane Chasemore said he and 17 other staff were isolating after a visitor to the factory tested positive to Covid-19.

Mr Chasemore said eight of the workers had since tested negative for the virus and the remainder were awaiting results.

He said the factory would be closed for another nine days and had put a halt to production and projects.
“We’re very disappointed in how things have turned out, but we’ve just got to get over it and move forward, and we’ll be open and taking care of our customers again in two weeks time,” Mr Chasemore said.

Another business in the suburb, Rare Spares, was also listed on Monday night as a Tier 2 exposure site.

A positive case visited the car parts store on Canterbury Rd between 2.30pm and 3pm on August 5, and anyone else who was there at the time has been asked to get tested and isolate until they get a negative result.

Calls to Rare Spares Bayswater on Tuesday afternoon were diverted to the company’s Roxburgh Park store.

Rare Spares’s website stated that its stores are offering a click and collect service in line with Melbourne’s lockdown restrictions.
