Walkers did a double take last weekend when a mysterious piano turned up on the Warburton Trail.
The beautiful instrument complete with candle holders sent many trail users into a spin, with many speculating about why it had been placed along the popular walking and rail trail that goes from Lilydale to Warburton.
Local band Open Kamodo took to social media to clear things up and explain they had been responsible for bringing the piano to the trail, placing it near the tunnel close to Hereford Rd, before using it as a prop in their latest video clip.
“We managed to get it onto the trail (without throwing our backs out) on Friday afternoon and recorded the video Saturday night,” the group posted online.
“We always intended on collecting it after we had finished, but logistically we couldn’t do it Saturday night in the dark.
“Today (Monday) we picked it up and it’s no longer on the trail. We didn’t expect a photo of it to appear on social media so quickly but we’re glad people were able to appreciate the piano while it was there.”
Speaking to Leader News, band members Tom Appleby and Aidan King said they had received a great reaction from everyone who spotted the piano, with many now following the band on social media, and some even suggesting a piano would be an awesome permanent addition to the trail.
Tom grew up in the area and said he had always loved the trail and the tunnel and thought it would be a great spot to film their video clip.
“We just had the idea that maybe we could get a piano there as there’s piano in the song and get some nice shots near the tunnel at night time,” he said.
The band got the piano for free off Facebook Marketplace and arranged for a friend with a crane truck to drop it off at the trail on Friday night, before the band members carried it to the tunnel on Saturday.
“We were shocked at how nice it looked,” Aidan said.
“We started the filming on the trail at about 3.30pm as the sun was making its way down and we got some nice shots and took advantage of the lovely weather we had on Saturday.”
“We didn’t think it would end up on social media so quickly but it’s such a nice looking piano, I think everyone was drawn to it,” Tom said.
“We didn’t want to annoy anyone and we didn’t want to litter but all the comments were positive and everyone seemed to like it.”
A couple of people have since suggested setting up a permanent piano on the trail, with children enjoying playing on it, and others taking photos for social media.
Open Kamodo, an alternative rock band, has been together since the end of 2021.
They plan to release their single featuring the piano, called Overstay, in the next three to four weeks.
“We just wanted to say a massive thanks to everyone who has followed us and sent us kind messages over the last couple of days,” the band posted online.
“The response to the story about the ‘mysterious’ piano we used for our upcoming music video has been amazing! “
