Violent brawl breaks out after soccer match between Preston and Northcote

A violent off-field brawl has erupted after a soccer game in Melbourne’s north.

A physical altercation broke out after the game between Preston Lions Football Club and Northcote Football Club on Friday evening.

A video obtained by the Herald Sun shows a group of men fighting in the car park of Northcote FC at the John Cain Memorial Park in Thornbury.

One man can be heard asking another to show him a bag before a brawl erupts.

A man is later seen lying on the ground as a group of men hit him with sticks before someone intervenes.

“Oi boys, stop with the sticks,” the man can be heard saying.

“Get back,” another man yells.

A man then can be seen kicking the man on the head as a woman screams in the background.

The violent attack goes on for a few more seconds before the video cuts out.

Northcote City FC President Michael Skliros said the aggression started after “external parties” not associated with either club stole property belonging to soccer fans at the game.

“Northcote City FC does not condone any violence and anti-social behaviour in our sport. Both clubs are assisting police with their investigation to ensure the matter can be swiftly closed,” he said.

Preston Lions Football Club declined to comment on the brawl but said Victoria Police were investigating.

A statement from Victoria Police confirmed they were investigating the incident.

“Emergency services were called to Clarendon St about 10.30pm after reports of a group of males fighting,” a spokesman said.

“On arrival they located a man in his 20s with an injury to his head.

“He was taken to hospital for treatment.”

Football Victoria (FV) in a statement said they were aware of the “serious incident” and were also doing their own investigations.

“FV condemns all forms of anti-social behaviour and violence ... Both this behaviour, and the individuals involved in it, have no place in our game,” a spokesman said.

“FV has contacted both clubs, who join FV in condemning the behaviour and will fully cooperate with the investigation.”

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or online.
