Emergency services have conducted a spectacular rescue of a crane operator trapped several storeys high in Alphington.

Fire rescue crews responded to calls of a workplace accident about 7.15am on Wednesday where it’s believed the crane operator fell from the cabin and became trapped in the shaft of the crane.

Firefighters performed a “high angle rescue” operation to free the man, who was then taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital.
