A thief who doused a stolen car in petrol has failed to set it alight after they crashed into a tree in Melbourne’s outer north overnight.
Emergency services were called to the smash after a passing motorist noticed the wreckage at the corner of Roxburgh Park Drive and Donald Cameron Drive, Roxburgh Park just after 3am on Monday.
Hume detective Senior Sergeant Ray Freeman said when Craigieburn CFA arrived they found the car had been covered in petrol but not set alight.
He said the offender was nowhere to be seen.
Sen-Sgt Freeman said police believed whoever poured the petrol over the Mazda tried to set it on fire but couldn’t.

The vehicle was stolen from Mickleham about 9.10pm on Sunday.
Police have taken the car for forensic examination.
