A Dallas man who was busted with a prohibited firearm scope claims is only used it for bird watching.

Taner Zeybeck pleaded guilty to possessing a firearm and cannabis at the Broadmeadows Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

In August 2022, Fawkner police conducted a compliance search at Zeybeck’s Dallas home and found the firearm scope and a plastic bag filled with cannabis in his bedroom.

Zeybeck, 49, told the police he did not know he owned a prohibited firearm scope and said he used it for bird watching,

Zeybeck also did not have a medicinal cannabis prescription for his stash.

Zeybeck, who represented himself, told the court he had overcome his “drug issues” and was “good” after getting out of rehab.

“I am soon going to get married. I am starting a new family and I want to move forward,” he said.

Magistrate Adriano Serratore told Zeybeck he had taken into account Zeybeck was unaware the firearm scope was a prohibited item.

Zeybeck was given an adjourned undertaking to be of good behaviour, ordered to forfeit the scope and had the cannabis charge dismissed.
