Two suspicious fires have burnt through homes in Melbourne’s northern suburb as police launch an investigation into the incidents.
Emergency services rushed to Heather Ct in Glenroy after receiving multiple triple-0 calls from neighbours about 7.20pm on Wednesday.
More than two dozen firefighters arrived within nine minutes to find the house engulfed fully in flames.
A Fire Rescue Victoria spokeswoman said firefighters donned breathing apparatus and quickly worked to control the blaze, containing it to the rear half of the house in under 25 minutes.
The Heather Ct house was unoccupied, and no injuries were reported but it was significantly damaged by the flames.
It’s believed unknown offenders entered the property just before 6.30pm on Wednesday and caused damage inside before a nearby resident saw flames and called emergency services.
The alleged firestarters then fled the scene and were last seen heading towards ATC Cook Reserve.
A Victoria Police spokeswoman said Merri-Bek Crime Investigation Unit detectives were investigating the blaze, which was being treated as suspicious.
Just a few hours later, another fire broke out in Melbourne’s northeast, burning through a block of units.
Firefighters were called to McComas St in Reservoir after reports of a double-storey block of four units on fire.
Crews, wearing breathing apparatus, contained the blaze to the top storey, where the fire is believed to have ignited.
A Fire Rescue Victoria spokeswoman said two of the four units were occupied at the time, but the occupants evacuated safely before the fire brigade arrived, and no injuries were reported. Authorities have yet to determine the cause but have also deemed this fire suspicious.
