Amateur librarians are using the power of books to bring a feeling of community back to their streets.

Community libraries have been growing in popularity after the Little Free Library initiative began in the US in 2009.

Street library owner Nicholas Hessenkamp, who has a book swap at 38 Roseberry Ave, Preston, said he was inspired to start one by his daughter, who loved the concept when she spotted them overseas.

The Hessenkamp library has been in operation for about a year.

“It’s a nice way to do some community engagement,” he said.

“We have quite a few younger families in our street who use it now and lots of people stop and have a look.

“When we’re in the front garden they talk to us about it.

Anyone is encouraged to leave a book and take a book and abide by the honesty system.

The Australian Street Library organisation was set up to help bring neighbourhoods closer together.

Aspiring library owners can buy a full library ready to go or the materials to build their own.

There are currently 1443 registered street libraries across the country.

Mr Hessenkamp said it was a great way for people to take the initiative and create a friendlier community.
