A TRUCK curfew will be imposed along Rosanna Rd if Labor wins this month’s State Election.

From July, 1, 2015, heavy haulage would be banned along Rosanna and Greensborough roads between Grimshaw and Banksia streets from 10pm-6am, seven days a week, if Labor won the November election.

The curfew would also extend to six other stretches of roads including;

Lower Plenty and Main Rd between Greensborough Rd and Fitzsimons Lane;

Para Rd between Grimshaw St and Lower Plenty Rd;

St Helena Rd, Karingal Drive and Bolton St between Grimshaw St and Lower Plenty Rd;

Ryans, Wattletree and Main roads between Diamond Creek Rd and Fitzsimons Lane;

Waiora Rd between Kingsbury Drive and Banksia St; and

Waterdale Rd between Kingsbury Drive and Bell St.

Ivanhoe state Labor MP Anthony Carbines said more than 600 residents signed a petition calling for action on Rosanna Rd.

He said the curfew would be a 12-month trial assessed by VicRoads in consultation with the community.

Mr Carbines said VicRoads would work with the council to make sure streets were not used as rat runs because of the curfew.

He said the restrictions would apply to all vehicles weighing more than 4.5 tonnes, except buses and caravans, to be enforced by Victoria Police and VicRoads Transport Safety Services.

State Roads Minister Terry Mulder and Ivanhoe Liberal candidate Carl Ziebell last month pledged $275,000 to investigate truck curfews and other solutions to reduce problems plaguing major arterial Rosanna Rd, which provides a link from the north to the Eastern Freeway.

Opposition Roads spokesman Luke Donnellan said the Liberal Party had four years to address the congestion and noise on Rosanna Rd but had done nothing.

Resolve Rosanna Road member Mario Panaccio said while he welcomed a curfew, trucks were only a small part of Rosanna Rd’s problems.

“We’re very happy about a curfew but the problem is more than trucks, it’s the volume of traffic, the noise, drivers speeding along there,” Mr Panaccio said.

Banyule councillor Tom Melican said a truck curfew was a good start but there needed to be a long-term plan for the congestion along Rosanna Rd.

“The problem remains that the traffic is getting worse and there is no long term plan to fix it,” Cr Melican said.
