Springthorpe Estate residents win battle for parking restrictions

A never-say-die attitude has paid off for this group of northern homeowners, after council agreed to parking restrictions to stop cars from a uni clogging the streets.

Parking restrictions will be trialled in Springthorpe Estate to stop university students and staff clogging the streets.

The council will implement a mix of 2-hour zones, no standing zones and disability spaces in the estate to prevent staff and students from nearby La Trobe University parking there.

Residents of the estate will be eligible for parking permits.

The new measures will remain in place until the council implements its citywide parking strategy.

Homeowner Gabriel Kuek said the decision was a welcome solution after such a long campaign for change.

“We get the problem resolved in the short term and keep our streets safe,” he said.

The estate’s residents’ group had been calling on the council and university to fix the parking problems for a decade.

Mr Kuek told the Leader last week that the overflow of cars from the university made crossing the road dangerous and encouraged people to park illegally.

“An ambulance was unable to get through the streets, rubbish trucks haven’t collected rubbish. It’s downright dangerous,” he said.

The council passed a notice of motion unanimously last night.

Darebin councillor Gaetano Greco said he had been aware of the issue for 10 years.

“The community has been persistent and patient,” he said.

But while the residents were glad for a temporary solution, Mr Kuek said they would continue to put pressure on the university to build more car parks for staff and students.

“We are not in the business of shifting our problems elsewhere,” he said.

University spokesman Tim Mitchell said the university would support any council restrictions.
