ROMSEY’S bid for sustained success in the Riddell District Football League has received a boost with the reigning premier unveiling four signings.

Cameron Wight, a two-time premiership player with Greenvale in the Essendon District Football League, headlines the additions.

The ruckman was on the Western Bulldogs’ list from 2005-08, managing 36 games at the top level.

“Obviously picking up an ex-AFL ruckman is fantastic. We’re super excited,” Romsey coach Dean Helmers said.

“Having so many good midfielders in the club, it’s going to be really good for him to try and give them first use of the ball.”

The Redbacks have also secured for Port Melbourne-listed VFL midfielder Luke Edmondson from Bendigo League outfit Kyneton, while Matthew and Chris Burkett have crossed from Lancefield and will bolster the on-ball division.

Romsey was the dominant team in the RDFL this year, completing an unblemished home-and-away campaign before knocking off Rupertswood, Riddell and Diggers Rest on its way to the premiership.

“We’re looking pretty strong again,” said Helmers, who is preparing for his second year at the helm.

“Obviously every other team has picked up pretty well, so it’s important that anyone you lose you want to make sure that you’re bringing in some fresh players to keep that spark going around the place.”

While the Redbacks’ signings will fill important roles in the middle of the ground, Helmers said they had not focused on luring midfielders.

But the coach said the club was intent on signing versatile players.

Travis Mills, David Caccamo and Shaun Austin have departed the Redbacks.

Helmers said Romsey was determined to repeat the success of this season.

“There’s a lot of work that goes into it,” he said.

“It’s not just a reward for us. The players and supporters and all the families get the enjoyment out of the success we had last year.

“We’re prepared to put the hard work in again and hopefully they can enjoy that success again.”
