WINS have been few and far between for Pascoe Vale this year but the club’s most impressive victory of the season against Aberfeldie last week has instilled confidence the Panthers are on the right track.
After Aberfeldie had hammered a previously unbeaten Avondale Heights side by 81 points in its last outing, Pascoe Vale pulled off one of the biggest upsets of 2014 by taking down the Abers by eight points when the two sides met last Saturday, 11.9 (75) to 10.7 (67).
The win was just the fourth of the season for the local side but Panthers coach David Morgan said it would prove a confidence-booster for the young outfit going forward.
“It was fantastic to beat a side above us and to show that we can still be competitive if we put in a four-quarter effort,” he said last week.
“The last six weeks, due to injury, we’ve played eight players under the age of 19, four of them being still eligible for under-18s.
“To do that and win the four games we have so far is a great effort.
“The more games these kids have played the more consistent they’ve got and it’s starting to show.”
Pascoe Vale could not back up the result on Saturday, falling to a finals-bound Keilor by 35 points.
But Morgan said most of the club’s list had already committed for next season as the Panthers looked to further develop in 2015.
Their focus for now though is to try and shake up the finals make-up this season, with the coach hopeful of claiming more scalps in the run home as his side looks towards matches against Maribyrnong Park, Greenvale, Avondale Heights and Airport West to round out the home-and-away campaign.
“If we can get another two or three wins in the rest of the season with our injury list the way it is, we’d be very happy with that,” Morgan said last week.
“We’ve only had 30 fit players over the past few weeks. We’ve even had three 50-year-olds take the field (last) Saturday in the reserves. ”
