The weekend’s Diamond Valley Cricket Association action, threw up plenty of surprises.

Here are all the key talking points.

A CAREER DAY AT PANTON HILL

Panton Hill batter Max Brook won’t be forgetting the weekend anytime soon. He fit a career best 155 runs from 183 balls to guide his side to a massive 8-331 on the opening day of its Mash Shield clash with Thomastown. His innings included 19 boundaries and four 6s.

DOUBLE CENTURIES FOR MACLEOD

Macleod is going to take some beating on day two of its clash with Research Eltham Collegians after posting 6-312 on the opening day. Pete Hawk (119 runs off 211 balls) and Daniel Falcke (109 not out off 144) shared a 158-run partnership to set up the game for the visitors. Hawk showed poise and class through his innings after scoring 16 boundaries and one six while Falcke hit 11 4s and three 6s. Falcke showed class with the bat after his high last season was 43.

LAMONT’S STIRRING KNOCK

Eltham star Andrew Lamont was at his brilliant best in his first innings of the season after hitting an impressive 132 runs off 198 balls before he was eventually dismissed in his side’s game against Banyule. The Panthers reached 6-302 at stumps with Lamont’s innings including 13 boundaries. Alongside Matthew Chrimes (51 off 116), the pair put on a 101-run partnership for the opening stand.

A FIRST FOR RIVERSIDE STAR

Riverside is on track for a big win over Bundoora on the back of a career first for Nik Martin. He finished with his first Barclay Shield five-for after finishing with figures of 5-29 to help his side to bowl Bundoora out for 136 on day one. In response, Riverside reached 0-71 with openers Nathan Chrimes and Mackenzie Stanley still at the crease.

ROSANNA HIGHLIGHTS BATTING POWER

He didn’t pass 50 once last season but Nick Carlton has made an impressive start to the campaign for Rosanna. He posted an unbeaten 50 as his side posted 5-276 on day one against North Eltham Wanderers. It was a near perfect day for Rosanna with Sam Sheean (73), Dalton Marsh (68) and Josh Henkel (53) also recording half-centuries.

STARS’ ALL-ROUNDER’S LATE ORDER DISPLAY

Lalor Stars all-rounder Ricardo Mittica was in fine form with the blade on Saturday afternoon. After coming in at number eight, he hit an unbeaten 70 off 81 to be his side’s top scorer in their total of 8-258. His innings was all about power as he hit seven boundaries and four 6s.

PROMISING START FOR RETURNING MITRESKI

After returning from Preston at the start of the season, Stefan Mitreski has made a promising start to his campaign for Thomastown United in the Mash Shield. He took 4-60 from his 13 overs as Mernda posted 301 on the opening day. United skipper Riley Patterson claimed four scalps of his own while Satinder Sekhon top scored with 85 off 65.
