KYNETON has filled one of its most pressing gaps with the signing of Whittlesea key forward Mitchell Scholard.

Scholard, who was the Northern Football League club’s leading goalkicker with 34 majors this year, signed with the Tigers last night.

His signing follows the club’s acquisition of Rhys and Alik Magin, who committed to the Bendigo Football League club in recent weeks.

“He played the majority of the season and kicked 34 goals from centre-half-forward,” Kyneton coach Mark Adamson said.

“He’s previously played at Aspley, won the league goalkicking up there in Brisbane.

“He’s a key forward and can certainly kick goals, it’s certainly one of the areas we were looking to bulk up.”

Best-and-fairest winner Ben Weightman was Kyneton’s leading goalkicker this year with 64 goals.

Adamson said securing a key forward to support Weightman had been one of the club’s top priorities.

“We had Harrison Huntley who’s capable of doing that, but he’s more of a utility as a forward,” he said.

“We really needed a big key target who’s a strong contested mark and can kick goals.

“Mitch fills the need there.”

Adamson said the Tigers were still hunting a key defender to cap their impressive recruiting haul.

“We’re still pursuing a key back, that’s really important for us,” he said.

“We’ve got some options that we’re looking at there at the moment.”

Kyneton finished seventh in 2014, its return year to senior football.
