FITZROY Stars sent shock waves through Northern Football League Division 2 proving what many thought could not be done is possible on Saturday.

The Stars consigned North Heidelberg to its first loss of the season, holding on for a 12.14 (86) to 12.11 (83) win at Sir Douglas Nicholls Oval.

Fitzroy led for much of the second half before withstanding a final challenge from the Dogs to maintain its unbeaten home record in 2014.

Kain Proctor and Mungara Brown shone for the home side, while Marc Lonergan booted four goals for North Heidelberg.

The Dogs maintained a two-game buffer at the top of the ladder despite the result.

In Division 1, Northcote Park’s finals chances appear to be over after a nine-point loss against Heidelberg at Bill Lawry Oval.

The Cougars were within striking distance at three-quarter-time but could not reel in the Tigers, who finished with a 7.12 (54) to 6.9 (45) win to enhance their top-two claims.

Thomastown had the bye in Division 3, where Heidelberg West and South Morang produced stirring finishes to win by less than a goal.

Ash Flavel kicked five goals as Reservoir kept pace with the Bears by hammering Parkside by 110 points.

Whittlesea will go in search of its first win of the season when it returns after a week off in Division 1 against Lower Plenty on Saturday.

Bundoora risks slipping further outside the top-five unless it upsets Greensborough, while Epping’s clash with Mernda and Fitzroy’s game against Lalor appear the pick of the Division 2 matches.
