A LETHAL father-son combination steered Parkside into the Victorian Amateur Football Association Division 4 grand final after a thumping win over North Brunswick on Saturday.

Shane Potter and his son Dylan combined for 10 goals as the Devils hammered the Bulls by 67 points in a preliminary final at Highgate Reserve.

Parkside dominated from the opening bounce, opening a 39-point quarter-time lead after booting eight goals to two.

North Brunswick drew one point closer at the main break, but the Devils’ sealed their progression by kicking away to a 50-point buffer at three-quarter-time.

With skipper Shane McLaren, Darren Gresham and Jonathan Friel in inspired form, Parkside powered to a 19.12 (126) to 8.11 (59) victory.

“We were happy to make finals initially, but we’ve just put together a couple of good games and clicked the last couple of weeks,” president Michael Sabelberg said.

“We’re rapt to head up to Division 3 and have a crack at a grand final next week.”

Sabelberg praised the dominant Potter pairing, Shane finishing with six goals while Dylan slotted four.

“It’s father and son,” he said.

“Dylan is under-17s but he’s come up to play with his dad. He’s adjusted to senior footy really well.

“We’ve really seen him develop in the games that he’s played this year.”

Parkside left the Northern Football League at the end of 2014 after finishing at the bottom of Division 3.

Under coach Joe D’Angelo, the Devils have gathered momentum at the right time in their return season in the VAFA, winning their last six matches.

“We took a long-term approach, we think (the VAFA) will be really good going forward with the junior club we’ve got,” Sabelberg said.

“They’re really well set up and we think it will give us a good chance going forward to be a strong club.”

Parkside will meet the winner of Box Hill North’s preliminary final against minor premier Canterbury in the season decider.
