East Sunbury hoping to add to its win tally in final weeks of EDFL Division 2 season

AFTER a winless debut season in the Essendon District Football League in 2013, East Sunbury is looking to finish this year with at least two — maybe three — wins as it eyes the final four rounds of the season.

The Thunder will face fellow new side Burnside Heights this weekend in Division 2, chasing a second win from the three clashes between the sides.

The going gets tougher after that with matches against Jacana, Roxburgh Park and East Keilor.

But East Sunbury coach Casey Whelan said his side would be striving to pinch at least one of those matches to show its improvement this year.

“I think Burnside we’re a good chance and I think maybe these other three sides going into finals might be a bit worried about their bodies,” he said.

“We’ll make sure we go out there and if they’re going to make finals they’re going to go in sore.”

The enthusiasm comes despite a disappointing day for the Thunder on Saturday, who suffered their second 100-point loss of the season to the same team that handed out their first three-figure defeat — Coburg Districts.

The visitors went in undermanned at Cole Reserve, with James Wakeling and Jonathan Jess both unavailable for the match.

At the end of the match, the 19.22 (136) to 1.6 (12) scoreline did not read well.

“I spoke to a number of people after the game and they said they couldn’t believe the scoreline was like that,” Whelan said.

“The game was an entertaining game and we fought it out.”
