SUNBURY Kangaroos have not featured in much of the premiership talk this season.
Premiers in 2012 and preliminary finalists in 2013, this year has certainly been an up-and-down one for the Kangaroos.
A 53-point loss on the weekend to reigning premier Riddell was one of the lower points, making for a 10-6 finish to the year.
But ahead of his side’s elimination final clash with the Kangaroos this weekend, Diggers Rest coach Shaun Sims has rated the 2012 premiers as dangerous a side as any heading into another finals campaign.
“They’re just as good as any of the other teams on their day,” Sims said.
“They’ve got a lot of runners, some decent forwards and decent backs. So that’s all we’re looking at at the moment, that’s for sure.”
The Burras did not have a finish to the regular season to write home about on Saturday either, going down to Rupertswood by 28 points.
Add that to the fact they had their “worst performance of the year” against Sunbury in Round 9 — suffering a 60-point thumping — and the Kangaroos would just about have to be instilled as favourites for the cut-throat clash at Melton’s McPherson Park on Sunday.
But Sims said history meant little when finals rolled around, the pointy end of the season a whole new ball game.
“The season basically means nothing when you start finals, especially when you go into an elimination final,” he said.
“It’s a pretty simple equation. If you win, you’re still in and if you lose, you’re out. I think our best footy is still good enough. We’ve just got to make sure we do it for a consistent four quarters”.
Diggers Rest finished runners-up to Riddell in last year’s grand final.
