THERE’S no question Darley has had a devil of a year.
The 2014 Ballarat Football League season has not been kind to Jarrod Edward’s side, which had won just one of its first six games before tackling Melton South on Saturday.
The tide might be turning slowly, but there were signs of a revival at Darley Park on Saturday as the Steven Kennedy inspired the Devils to their second win of the season.
Kennedy was everywhere Darley needed him to be, booting four goals as the Devils overcame a quarter-time deficit to record a 16.16 (112) to 11.3 (69) win.
The win lifted Darley to eighth, just two points behind finals aspirants Lake Wendouree, Bacchus Marsh and East Point.
Melton was competitive for three quarters against North Ballarat City, but couldn’t peg back a 31-point margin after being dominated early.
The deficit stretched to 47 by the final siren with Derick Micallef booting five majors for the victors.
Bacchus Marsh was beaten for its fourth-straight match, succumbing to Ballarat by 38 points.
Cam Richardson faces the first major test of his coaching career, needing to turn around a team which showed so much promise in the opening rounds before it faces Melton this weekend at McPherson Park.
Sunbury had the bye and returns with a tough road trip to face the Lakers.
In the Bendigo Football League, Kyneton surrendered a three-quarter-time lead to go down by seven points against Eaglehawk.
Ben Weightman was at it again for the Tigers, slotting seven goals, but his efforts were not enough as Kyneton fell four points behind Eaglehawk and Kangaroo Flat in the race for finals.
The Tigers have this weekend off, while Gisborne tackles Castlemaine.
The Dogs can open a handy two-game buffer over their nearest rivals with victory on Saturday.
