The RSPCA has labelled the discovery of a dog found wandering in Wollert with its ears hacked off “an appalling act of senseless cruelty”.

The female American Staffordshire bull terrier was discovered by a member of the public on Summerhill Rd with cropped ears that had been crudely bandaged and taped together on September 1.

RSPCA Victoria inspector Julia Hampson said most of the dog’s ears had been removed.

“These procedures are only permitted if they are conducted by a registered veterinary practitioner for the health or welfare of an animal, and the assessment of our veterinarians is that this has absolutely not been the case in this instance,” Ms Hampson said.

The RSPCA believe the ears of the dog were intentionally cut off.

Veterinarians believe the gruesome act was carried out only days before the dog was found, she said.

Attention had turned to finding the owner and perpetrator, however the dog did not have a collar or microchip.

“We’re urging anyone with information about this dog’s history or her background to come forward and help us identify the person or persons responsible for this act of cruelty,” Ms Hampson said.

It is an offence under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act to wound or mutilate an animal.

If caught the offender could face a fine of $41,305 or 12 months in jail.

The dog is now receiving specialised care at RSPCA Burwood.

Anyone with information is urged to call 9224 2222 or make a report.
