A 17-YEAR-OLD is the toast of Riddell Cricket Club after breaking the Gisborne and District Cricket Association's league batting record.
Hayden Castle resumed at 209 against St Anthonys on Saturday, needing nine runs to break the longstanding GDCA A Grade record for the highest individual score.
Despite a few nervous moments, he achieved the milestone in three overs, also eclipsing club stalwart Gerard Nolan's Riddell record of 215 in the process.
"It was a really good atmosphere when I did it, everyone was just celebrating," Castle said.
"I snicked about eight runs through slips, it was pretty nerve-racking walking out there."
He said he has "mixed emotions" about breaking the record set by one of the club's stalwarts.
Riddell finished its innings on 4-399 before rolling St Anthonys for 99.
Despite the 300-run win, which cemented Riddell's place in the GDCA top four, there was no doubt the day belonged to Castle.
GDCA secretary Rob McIntyre confirmed the league record.
McIntrye said he believed only two other batsmen had passed 200 in A Grade in the league's history.
Riddell's A Grade team manager Peter Cullen said Castle's mark would likely stand for years to come.
"It's a great achievement for a 17-year-old player," Cullen said.
"It's fantastic for Hayden and fantastic for the club."
Castle started the 2013-14 season with Premier Cricket Club Footscray-Edgewater.
The young star returned to Riddell for travel reasons and to play alongside his brother, opening batsman Luke Castle.
