Emergency services have been called to a suspected factory fire in Reservoir.

Police and firefighters arrived at the factory of Alucoat Australia at 6 Parer St, Reservoir shortly after 12.15pm on Thursday.

Parer St is blocked off to traffic while smoke can be smelt in the air.

FRV crews wearing breathing apparatus attacked the blaze with the incident under control at 12.36pm.

Northern District FRV Commander Alex Faris said it was thanks to the factory owners’ cleaning practices the fire was not much worse.

“It could’ve easily been through the roof,” he said of the blaze which started when a build up of powdered paint “dust” at the back of the oven exploded.

“We’re grateful these guys maintain a good cleaning regimen,” he said.

Ambulance Victoria and Victoria Police also attended the incident.

Workers are expected to be able to return to the factory at 4pm.
