A collection of stolen cars fitted with manufactured number plates was discovered when police raided a Reservoir property, a court has heard.

And police say the property was the home of a man known for a stack of other offences, including driving through a motel’s gate and smashing his way into a service station with a fire extinguisher.

Alex Repac fronted Heidelberg Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, June 9, charged with four thefts of a motor vehicle, handling stolen goods and number plates and bail offences following the police raid.

Repac used a fire extinguisher to smash glass doors at the Gladstone Park BP service station.

The court heard police searched a property in Joan Court, Reservoir, on December 3, finding four stolen cars, including a Mercedes-Benz, all fitted with number plates that had been cloned to match cars for sale online.

Senior Constable Lauren Dri said police also found a stolen motorcycle at the property, as well as three stolen number plates.

The court Repac was believed to have been living at the property at the time along with other men.

The 36-year-old, who appeared before the court by video link from jail, pleaded guilty to the charges after Magistrate Helen Murphy indicated she would serve him with 200 hours community work — not more jail time.

Repac had been in jail for 173 days, with Ms Murphy having indicated on May 1 he needed to serve six months prison for the multiple other crimes he pleaded guilty to on that day.

Repac had admitted to accelerating through a motel’s gate and speeding down Melton Highway with it still attached to his car, and to using a fire extinguisher to smash glass doors at Gladstone Park BP service station.

The court heard he also pleaded to charges including dangerous driving, stealing a dildo from Sexyland, carrying knives, and possessing methamphetamine and cocaine.

Ms Murphy noted Repac had a significant criminal history, but said he was entitled to a discount in his sentence because he had chosen to plead guilty.

Considering all the charges before the court, which stretched from June 2018 until February this year, Ms Murphy sentenced Repac to a total of six months’ jail, with a 24-month community corrections order including 200 hours community work and drug treatment.

He was also fined $800.
