THE FIRST sod has been turned on the new Preston High site, seven months ahead of its 2019 opening date.
New principal Sean Butler was joined by Education Minister James Merlino and Preston state Labor MP Robin Scott on the work site to celebrate the kick-off.
The $15.6 million project will convert former Preston Girls’ Secondary College buildings into a a new state-of-the art complex, Mr Butler said.

He said there was a huge amount of work to do to get the school ready for the 2019 school year, and he was serious about the school’s mission statement: “empowering tomorrow’s leaders.”
“Enrolments are continuing to come in and there is a real buzz of excitement at the local primary school gates about this fantastic, new and unique opportunity to create the culture and shape the future of a school,” Mr Butler said.
Mr Scott thanked the community for their hard work in campaigning for the school and said the new buildings would be top-notch.
“The new state-of-the-art Preston High School will encourage students to engage, thrive and reach their full potential,” Mr Scott said.
The school will start with a single year of year seven students enrolled from term 1 2019, and begin employment of teachers and other staff from semester 2 this year.
