Old Ivanhoe Grammarians Football Club’s road toll campaign on the mark

Old Ivanhoe Grammarians Football Club has kicked goals in a statewide campaign aimed to drive down the state road toll.
The club were one of 100 clubs across Victoria to take part in the Towards Zero footy round at the weekend.
The team, who took on the Old Mentonians Football Club at Chelsworth Park, ran through a Towards Zero banner and played with blue laces.
Seniors Captain Michael Mitris was also presented with a jersey with the number zero on it, while the club hosted a road safety talk with hosted road safety talks by police Senior Sergeant Stuart Thompson.
The campaign asks community netball and football clubs to promote the message of safe driving with the aim of a zero road toll.
This year’s state roadtoll sits at 172.
Old Ivanhoe Grammarians vice president Stephen King said too many people lost their lives on the road.
Sen-Sgt Thompson said road safety was a community responsibility.
“The hidden cost of unsafe driving is the thousands of people who’ve experienced serious injury,” he said.
“People don’t like to think about it because they say it won’t happen to them.”

AFL Victoria head Rick Bell said it was incredible to see clubs around the state rallying behind the Towards Zero message.
“The readiness of our football community to open themselves up and tell their own stories was quite remarkable.”
“We thank everyone for getting involved and doing their part in showing that we all have a role to play in working towards zero,” Rick Bell said.
