Travellers heading to the airport are facing significant delays after a horror multi-vehicle crash on a major freeway.

All outbound lanes of the Calder Fwy have been closed near DFO in Essendon after a multi-vehicle collision on Wednesday about 7am.

The lane closures have also caused traffic on the Tullamarine Fwy.

Authorities are urging drivers heading to Melbourne Airport to allow extra time because of the congestion on Tullamarine Fwy.

Outbound traffic wanting to reach the Calder Freeway are urged to take the earlier exit at Bulla Rd, sticking to the right lanes to merge on the Calder Fwy.

Motorists who miss the earlier exit will have to continue on the Tullamarine Fwy and exit at Melrose Dr before taking Westfield Dr onto the M80 to reach the Calder Fwy.

A Department of Transport spokesman urged motorists to obey the overhead signals and to merge early for the safety of crews working on the road.

“These lane closures are under the control of emergency services and the lanes will only re-open when it’s safe to do so,” he said.

“Our signals team is monitoring conditions in the area and will adjust traffic lights to minimise congestion on surrounding roads.”
