Mice infestations hits new residential estates across Whittlesea, Hume, Melton

Rodent infestations are on the rise in homes across new estates in Melbourne’s west and north, with pest controllers saying they are getting a “crazy” increase in calls as they reveal tips to control the pests.

New estates across Melbourne’s fringe are dealing with an increase in mice infestations, according to pest controllers.

Increased development at housing estates across Melbourne’s outer suburbs is disrupting mice colonies and causing them to seek refuge in newly built family homes, pest controllers say.

Ex Pest and Termite Control owner Ekrami Zakhari said calls about suspected rodent infestations in homes across the fringes of Whittlesea, Hume and Melton had “skyrocketed” in the past two weeks.

“It’s normal to get an increase during this time, but this increase is crazy,” he said.

“There are more and more calls coming from new estates and a lot of these homes are near open land where construction is going on.

“They are disturbing mice nests in the soil, so naturally when disturbed (mice) will go to the nearest place to seek warmth.”

Mr Zakhari said mice were entering through roof cavities in 90 per cent of cases.

He also said the pests were entering via open doors, gaps between windows and cracks in walls.

“If they’re not in the roof, they’ll usually be behind the fridge because the motor keeps them warm — or they’ll be in the pantry close to a food source,” he said.

“It’s best to get on top of it early if you are noticing their presence — in winter they breed non-stop — about 10-15 times with just as many babies each time.”

Premier Pest Control director Adam Whitchurch also said there was a “significant rise” in mice activity throughout new residential estates.

“If you hear scratching in wall or roof cavities or see droppings below the kitchen sink then you’ve probably got mice inside your home,” he said.

Mr Whitchurch recommended keeping a clean home and removing any accessible food sources.

Proofing any holes or cracks was also advised.
