Footy fans heading to the MCG on the Mernda and Hurstbridge lines face delays after a person was hit by a train at Jolimont station.

Metro Trains reported buses are replacing trains between Parliament and Clifton Hill after the person was hit on Friday afternoon.

Replacement buses are in operation but passengers are urged to allow an extra 45 minutes for their journey.

A Department of Transport spokesman said trains were continuing to operate between Clifton Hill, Mernda and Hurstbridge, with delays likely.

“Passengers heading to the CBD might also consider walking 850m from Clifton Hill Station to Queens Parade to board a Route 86 tram,” he said.

Other options available for those travelling through Flinders Street include catching a train to Richmond or taking trams from Flinders St to the ‘G via Routes 48, 70 or 75.

It comes in addition to the bumper to bumper traffic gridlock on the West Gate Bridge and other major arterials leading to the home of football as the work week concludes and diehard fans make their way to the ground.
