MONASH FREEWAY

The Monash Freeway is among Melbourne’s most hated roads.
The Monash Freeway is among Melbourne’s most hated roads.

“I spent 40 minutes in traffic on the M1 driving past Pakenham on Monday … Only to find a lane closed for absolutely no reason. 40 minutes to drive 6km. With a screaming kid in the back seat who desperately needed to pee – but because of the concrete barrier there was nowhere to pull over. I was fuming when I passed the merge sign, only to see it immediately went back to two lanes”- GraveTidingz.

“Monash, trucks in the right lane (why don’t we ban trucks from right lanes on freeways?!?), constant road works, road works that close lanes during in and outbound peak, it’s long, lots of roads mentioned here are only bad for a few KM’s.” – PhillipIslandPenguin

“Ahhhh the old Monash roadworks. We will make you spend an extra hour in traffic each day for about four years so that we can add an extra lane or two that will immediately be gridlocked the minute it opens. Saving us exactly zero minutes commute at the cost of millions upon millions of taxpayer dollars.” – rewbzz

“Yes! And they installed three speed cameras along that small stretch of 60km/h road.

“Oh and then promptly changed the area around Warringal Plaza into a 40km/h zone. So many people get done there, it’s beyond funny.”- cuteseal

“Don’t you just love how the lanes are slightly too narrow at certain points to actually fit two vehicles comfortably abreast? And that the road is a major truck thoroughfare?”- Threadheads

“Plenty Road. Could (n’t) … it have just (been) widened enough the first time instead of … four years now of widening works?” – Cavalish

“Don’t even. Took me 1hr 30mins to drive 16kms down Plenty Road this afternoon …. Worst … road ever.” – lunanicche

“It has a sibling up in Essendon, where Mount Alexander Rd, Lincoln Rd, Keilor Rd and Bulla Rd meet.” – Omegaville

“Anderson St is a mess. Need to be one way!” – wobblebubble135

“Hate Warrigal Rd. The … 40km zone by Holmesglen TAFE. The congestion by the M1 entrances/off ramps which leads straight into congestion by Chadstone.

“Then once you hit Dandenong Rd it’s narrow and busy until past South Rd, and the Centre Rd intersection with all the shops having separate turn offs.”- PaleHorse82

“Lots of pedestrian crossings (which do have a right to be there), lots of buses slowing down the left lane. and everyone turning right into their properties (also a necessity for them) but damn it’s such a sh** drive.” – prexton

“That s*** jumps between km/h changes more times than we’ve had prime ministers, plus a four-five lane road with drivers in a row going 50km/h in line with each other at an 80km zone and no one knows to take the left hand lane for slow driving.” – Obvious_Bandicoot631

“Bell St through Pascoe Vale and Coburg just scares the sh** out of me — it’s a sh**** maintained road, narrow lanes, constant turns left and right that you have to slam on the brakes for, multiple servos that people merge in from.” – garythegyarados

MONTAGUE ST INTERCHANGE

“l know this is a subjective thing … But objectively it’s the Montague St interchange under the Westgate Freeway near DFO. (It) is nightmarish to navigate as a driver, cyclist or pedestrian. Lanes are terribly marked and often don’t really line up with the opposite side of the intersection so cars just dive across lanes with no warning. It’s also so wide and confusing that people enter the intersection then get disoriented or spot a red light for a different entry/exit and stop in the middle. So you have to either stop with them and get … marooned or navigate around this new traffic island while still keeping track of everything else going on.” – xvf9

“You have to drive to Point Cook to enjoy the most stupid intersection ever in Australia. Snydes Road and Point Cook Road intersection has no traffic lights but carries thousands of cars every morning and evening. You could set up a BBQ and enjoy a meal before you could do a turn into Point Cook Road. Residents have been asking for traffic lights for at least a decade.” – DURIAN8888

Driving down St George’s Rd is often not a pleasant experience.

“St Georges Road is the only road I know where people continue to drive 20km/h under the limit and, as a result, score every red light along its length. And there are a lot of lights.” – stonefree251

“Man, I hate it when people drive 50 on St Georges. It’s 70 most of the way!” – sluggardish

“It’s faster to cycle than drive it some days.” – NeanderStaal

“Sydney Road!!! UGH. Even after 5.5 years of living in Brunswick, I’ve driven on it only a handful of times because I absolutely despise it. Stupid drivers, standstill traffic. Lygon can be horrible at times too going through Brunswick East.” – melbslove26
