Northern Melbourne’s top performing NAPLAN schools have been revealed following the 2019 results release.

Students in Year 3, 5, 7 and 9 took part in the controversial nationwide standardised test in May.

The test is designed to measure students in literacy and numeracy and track progress.

Across the northern Melbourne region found Year 3 and Year 5 students at Preston West Primary School got an average NAPLAN score of 522.3 – the area’s top performing primary school.

The second best performing primary school was Fitzroy Community School where the average result was 521.5 for Year 3 and Year 5 students.

The third best performing primary school was Ivanhoe Girls’ Grammar School where the school-wide average score was 520.4.

Melbourne Grammar School was Northern Melbourne’s top performing high school. Their Year 7 and Year 9 students received an average NAPLAN score of 611.1.

The second best performing high school was Ivanhoe Girls’ Grammar School where the average score was 605.8, while the third best performing school was University High School where the average score was 601.5.

Alphington Grammar School assistant principal Lukas Silver said they were thrilled with the students’ results and it was a result of a choice to deliver literacy and numeracy teaching in every part of the curriculum.

“Schools can no longer afford to limit the teaching of literacy and numeracy to the English and math departments. They are global skills and require global delivery,” Mr Silver said.

“Additionally our Learning Support staff provide scaffolded learning experiences to cater for all abilities, ensuring success for all learners across the School.”

Fitzroy Community School principal Timothy Berryman said he was “incredibly proud” of his students.

“To produce results like that doesn’t go without hard work,” he said.

“And not only do we want to keep those results going, but it’s important to stop and reflect on the teaching team – they are a special bunch.”

Mr Berryman said the school’s focus on students’ emotional and social development had helped achieve academic success.

“Such a focus on these aspects on students in the first couple of years at school then makes classes run so much more smoothly further down the track.”

The NAPLAN test remains controversial with the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority, the federal body responsible for developing national curriculum and assessment, this year revamping the MySchool website where school’s NAPLAN results are publicly displayed.

Focus groups across the country found MySchool was difficult to navigate and was filled with technical language and jargon.

ACARA also had to further explain on the website the benefits of NAPLAN and MySchool to parents.
