WorkSafe is investigating after a man in his forties was crushed to death while unloading stone slabs in a shipping container in Campbellfield on Thursday morning.

It is believed stone sheets shifted inside the container at the Foden Ave property in Campbellfield about 10am on February 20, trapping the man.

Emergency services workers tried to free him, but he died at the scene.

A second man was also taken to hospital for observation, a Victoria Police statement said.

Police will prepare a report for the Coroner.
