NADA Kocoska believes she wouldn't be alive if it wasn't for the brave actions of Kingsbury nine-year-old Brandon Iredale.

The Heidelberg West resident was visiting the Reservoir Leisure Centre on a hot January day with her grandchildren.

Ms Kocoska, who migrated to Australia from Macedonia in 2005, can't swim, so she stuck to the middle-sized pool and was wading through the water when she believes her leg locked up, causing her to slip over.

She fell backwards and with her non-responsive leg unable to regain footing, went under the water.

Ms Kocoska said she tried to wave for help, but no one saw her except Brandon, who was playing nearby with friends.

He instinctively reached out to help and was able to pull Ms Kocoska up enough for her to take a gasp of air.

A woman nearby saw what was happening, handed the baby she was holding to a friend and helped Brandon hoist Ms Kocoska out of the water.

The 57-year-old had swallowed a lot of water, but made a full recovery.

Brandon said he had seen splashes from under the water and realised someone was in trouble.

"I reached out, it was hard to pull her up," he said.

"I got her up a bit and this other lady helped as well."

Ms Kocoska said she was hugely grateful and felt she would have drowned if not for Brandon's help.

She said she also wanted to thank the woman who helped get her out of the pool, but lost sight of her while she was recovering.
