A man who formerly ran a Wendy’s ice cream parlour was caught selling a different kind of ice after police found more than $10,000 cash in his pocket.

Jamil Hossni, 39, was sentenced to four months’ jail and a 12-month corrections order before Heidelberg Magistrates’ Court on Friday, having pleaded guilty to a series of charges including drug dealing and careless driving.

The Roxburgh Park man was found to have $10,245 — almost all in $50 notes — when police stopped him as he was driving on Mahoneys Rd, Reservoir about midnight on August 7.

He also had small bags of ice and hashish on him and police found multiple text conversations on his phone showing he was selling drugs.

The court heard Hossni was on bail after he went through a red light in Broadmeadows and slammed into a car about 4pm on January 26, 2020.

He had drugs in his system and was driving an unregistered and unroadworthy car.

Hossni had also been caught growing five cannabis plants at a Thomastown property in January 2019, and had been found hoarding stolen goods, cannabis and ice there in July 2019.

The court heard the father had also been repeatedly caught trying to sell stolen items on Facebook Marketplace using his own profile, including a Ford Falcon and power tools.

Hossni’s lawyer told the court his client, who previously ran a Wendy’s ice cream franchise with his ex-wife, had begun doing hard drugs following the marriage breakdown in 2017, leading to his sudden criminality.

The court heard Hossni had been working as a subcontractor for Ausnet and had employment to return to once he was let out of jail.

It was heard he came from a supportive family who was not otherwise involved with the police.

Magistrate Stephen Ballek sentenced Hossni so he would be released forthwith, with the crim having already served 153 days’ jail.
