ISS cleaners photographed flouting social distancing in Brunswick

An eagle-eyed pedestrian has snapped an “extremely ironic” scene where Moreland cleaners can be clearly seen flouting social distancing on a Brunswick footpath. The council has issued the cleaning company with a please-explain.

A group of community deep cleaners have been sprung flouting social distancing after an eagle-eyed pedestrian photographed the employees “clustered together” on a Brunswick footpath.

Pascoe Vale resident Louise Beaumont snapped the group of seven ISS Facility Services workers on the Barkly St footpath about 1pm on Monday as they waited for a colleague to retrieve cleaning equipment from the back of a parked van.

“I just thought it was extremely ironic,” she told the Leader.

“Here they were supposed to help clean the community of bad germs when they were just clearly not adhering to social distancing which is meant to be our best defence against coronavirus.

“The photo says it all really.”

Ms Beaumont said another group wearing the same work attire was walking down Sydney Rd spraying and wiping high-touch points.

“Clearly this group in a tight circle on the footpath were there to do similar jobs as well, but I just thought the way they had congregated couldn’t be okay,” she said.

THE MORELAND STORIES THAT MATTERED 10 YEARS AGO

It comes after the State Government organised and funded a “cleaning blitz” to be conducted across Moreland and other Melbourne council areas to reduce the spread of coronavirus.

The blitz included deep cleaning of hard surfaces in areas of high foot traffic such as traffic lights and poles, street and park benches, bike racks, handrails and bins.

Moreland Council spokesperson Christine Butcher said the photographed workers were not council employees and the complaint had been passed onto ISS.

“Workers for this cleaning blitz are supervised by cleaning company ISS under the direction of State Government,” she said.

ISS has been contacted for comment.
