Hume detectives win Mick Miller award for burglary reducing efforts

Hume detectives have been awarded one of Victoria Police’s top honours for their efforts in reducing crime. They arrested 405 offenders for more than 2680 offences during 2018 and recovered a staggering amount of stolen property.

Hume detectives have been awarded one of Victoria Police’s top honours for their efforts in reducing volume crime.

The Hume Crime Investigation Unit crime reduction team were recognised with the 2019 Mick Miller Outstanding Team Award Commendation.

Detective Senior Sergeant Barry Gipp said the team were chosen for their outstanding work in targeting and reducing volume crime offences in the Hume region.

The detectives arrested 405 offenders for more than 2680 offences during 2018.

They also recovered almost $1 million in stolen property and achieved a 32 per cent decrease in burglary offending across the municipality, resulting in 680 less burglary offences last year compared to 2017.

“Hume CIU management is extremely proud of the work our members have performed and continue to do to reduce residential and commercial burglaries,” Sen-Sgt Gipp said.

“To be recognised by receiving such a prestigious award speaks volumes to the dedication and commitment of our members.”

The awards are named after Mick Miller, a former Victoria Police chief from 1977-1987, and are given in recognition of outstanding performance and contribution of detectives fighting serious crime and organised crime in Victoria.

Miller passed away last month.

His legacy included introducing taskforce policing, the Air Wing and the Special Operations Group.

Victoria Police Legacy and Crime Stoppers were formed under his stewardship.
