A COMMUNITY push for a new high school in Preston has started.

The High School for Preston campaign was launched on Facebook amid news children in Preston West and parts of Thornbury no longer have guaranteed entry to Northcote High due to the opening of Coburg Junior High, as reported last week.

The Facebook page describes itself as a “grassroots campaign to establish an open-entry coeducational high school in Preston to provide quality public education”.

The page cites data stating there will be 2,050 secondary school-aged children and 2,756 primary school-aged children in the Preston area by 2021.

“These children will need a local public high school to attend,” the page states.

“If the surrounding high schools are overstretched, which is highly likely, where will they go?”

The push follows a highly successful campaign in neighbouring Moreland, where High School for Coburg campaigners last week celebrated a win as the State Government pledged $3.5 million to upgrade buildings for a junior campus.
