Hady Alashy: Craigieburn uni student pleads guilty to assaulting police officer, driving on meth

Not long ago, a young Craigieburn man was at university and living happily with his family – now the young man’s future is hanging by a thread.

Craigieburn man Hady Alashy, 23, pleaded guilty at the Broadmeadows Magistrates Court this week for drug-driving and assault, including on a police officer at his parents home.
Craigieburn man Hady Alashy, 23, pleaded guilty at the Broadmeadows Magistrates Court this week for drug-driving and assault, including on a police officer at his parents home.

A Craigieburn man “charged” at police before assaulting one officer with a wild left swing during an altercation at his family home, a court has heard.

It was one of a number of offences committed by Hady Alashy, 23, who only a few years ago was a promising university student before ice and marijuana took over his life, the Broadmeadows Magistrates Court was told on Monday.

Alashy pleaded guilty to the assault of a police officer, which occurred outside his family home in Craigieburn and which saw the young man pepper-sprayed by police officers.

The court was told Alashy’s mother had recently endured a nervous breakdown because of her son’s crimes, with defence lawyer Sophie Brooks-Miller conceding the family was “at their wits end”.

The court was told that on November 8, concerned by her son’s behaviour, Alashy’s mother called police and requested their attendance at the family home.

Alashy “charged at police” when they tried to arrest him, the court heard, and struck an officer in the face before he was pepper sprayed, subdued and then arrested.

The Craigieburn man also assaulted a Bunnings security guard in April 2020, when he was found at the tool section of the hardware store placing items in a blue Tommy Hilfiger bag.

When he was approached by security Alashy made a run for it through the timber section of the store, where police said he tripped and fell over, before he punched the victim to the left side of their face.

Two months prior to his Bunnings offence, Alashy was found driving in Craigieburn with meth in his system, despite his probationary licence being under suspension.

He told police at the time he smoked “something in a pipe” the day prior and told them, “I need to earn a living”.

Ms Brooks-Miller said the family had “tried at lengths” to help Alashy.

She said that he began experimenting with ice and cannabis as a teenager, but was clean when he completed two years of a degree at LaTrobe University.

Ms Brooks-Miller said Alashy relapsed when he was 21.

She said Alashy’s mother had suffered a nervous breakdown on Friday, while an underlying heart condition had been exacerbated by her son’s offences.

Magistrate Julie Grainger granted bail to Alashy, and said “promise me your going to behave yourself”.

He will return to court in March to be sentenced.
