A DERELICT pedestrian access way in Craigieburn is continuing to pose safety risks, despite years of community complaints to Hume Council.
The Aitken Creek ford crossing at Linear Reserve, between Axminster and Clovelly Drives, has a history of being flooded and clogged by sludge and branches after heavy storms.
The Leader reported in April last year and again in February this year that the poor condition of the ford crossing had been leaving mobility users unable to cross the creek.

This time, residents have complained about damaged railing.
Craigieburn’s Kevin Balaam said the ford crossing had been a hazard for bike riders and pedestrians for many years.
“Craigieburn residents feel badly let down by the authorities not remedying the situation,” he said.
At a recent Hume Council meeting, councillor Jodi Jackson highlighted the “ongoing safety issues” associated with the existing low level crossing, and requested that council consider constructing a replacement bridge.
“The flooding issues are not going away … and it’s quite important that we deal with this as soon as possible,” Cr Jackson told the gallery.
“If you’re a pedestrian or if you’re disabled, there’s no other way — aside from walking kilometres out of your way — to get across the creek.
“We need to take this more seriously.”
Cr Jackson estimated a new bridge would cost about $200,000, based on similar projects.
A Melbourne Water spokesperson said the organisation would welcome the opportunity to review a proposed change or upgrade by the council to the crossing.
The council’s chief executive Domenic Isola said a report on the options for a new bridge would be prepared for the council to consider in coming months.
The damaged rails at Aitken Creek Linear Reserve are expected to be repaired in coming weeks.
