A Reservoir couple have been hospitalised for smoke inhalation after they discovered their kitchen had caught fire in the early hours of this morning.

Emergency services were called to Broadhurst Ave home just before 12.30am and found the blaze in a centrally located kitchen.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus contained the fire to just the kitchen and brought it under control within 25 minutes.

A woman, aged in her 60s, and a man in his 70s were able to evacuate the house before fire crews arrived.

Paramedics treated the pair at the scene for possible smoke inhalation and both were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

An MFB spokeswoman said the couple were “fortunate” to escape the flames as no smoke detector was installed at the property.

She said the fire was caused by curtains falling onto an oil lamp.
