An elderly woman is fighting for her life in hospital after a crash in Melbourne’s north east on Monday afternoon.
A woman in her 70s was flown to The Alfred hospital after a Ford sedan crashed into the back of a bus at the Orchard Rd and Yan Yean Rd roundabout outside Plenty Valley Christian College at Doreen about 1.30pm.
An Ambulance Victoria spokesperson confirmed the woman was in a serious condition, with serious injuries.
A man in his 80s was taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital by ambulance also with serious injuries.
Orchard Rd resident Phil, who was working from home at the time of the crash, said the driver of the PTV bus involved in the incident appeared to be “OK” but “a bit shaken up”.
He believed the only passenger aboard the bus was a teenage girl, who was not injured.
He said the elderly woman, who was a passenger in the sedan travelling north, was “not in a good way” when emergency services including police, fire crews, and paramedics arrived on scene.
He was surprised there had not been more serious collisions at that location, saying “Something needs to happen” to improve the safety of the roundabout.
“People come down (Yan Yean Rd) and fly over the roundabout instead of going around it and they do it at about 80km/h – it’s ridiculous,’’ he said,
“Trying to get out (of Orchard St) and turn right — you have to contend with people flying up and down the hill.
“And when the council doesn’t cut back the trees, it’s even harder to see.
“One resident has taken to the trees himself with a pruning brush.”
Motorists on Yan Yean Rd faced delays throughout the afternoon, with northbound traffic backed up for about 3.5km and multiple diversions in place until after 4pm.
Police appealed for anyone with information or dashcam footage to contact Crime Stoppers to assist the ongoing investigation.
