A drunken argument at the Carlton commission flats sparked a heavily-armed police operation which caused a nearby primary school into lockdown.

Firomsa Awal, 19, pleaded guilty in the County Court on May 8 to attempted aggravated burglary.

Awal encountered his two male victims while outside the Drummond St flats just before 3pm on December 4, 2018.

Awal and one of the men got into an argument which quickly turned physical.

The pair punched and kicked each other, the court heard.

The man twice threw Awal into a pylon before he and a second man entered the flats.

Awal followed the pair into the elevator, before they went into an apartment.

Awal went to another unit on the same floor before going with a co-offender to his victims’ unit.

The court heard Awal and his co-offender banged on the door, and smashed the kitchen windows in an attempt to get into the apartment.

Police arrived within minutes and headed upstairs to the apartment but only found the two victims.

Outside, heavily-armed police surrounded the building and a nearby primary school was placed in lockdown.

At about 6.40pm, more than three hours after the incident began, Awal and a co-offender were captured on CCTV leaving the building.

Both gave false names to police after they were intercepted walking away from the building.

The pair then did a runner but were arrested shortly later.

Awal told police he went to the unit to “smoke choof” and “play X-box”.

The court heard, Awal had been “drinking all night and into the day” right before his encounter with his victims.

Judge Martine Marich will sentence Awal on May 18.

Awal’s co-offender was given a 12-month youth attendance order last year.

The boy was charged with attempted aggravated burglary, commit indictable offence while on bail, criminal damage and intentionally destroying property.
