FIRST came the Nutella doughnut craze, now Melbourne could be in for another doughnut fixation.
A Carlton ice-cream shop will be one of a handful of stores around the country to start serving a gelato doughnut from next week.
In what is believed to be an Australia-first, Gelatissimo will offer customers a warm doughnut filled with a scoop of gelato.
The gelato is placed in the centre of the doughnut and placed in a pie warmer for 45 seconds, leaving a crisp doughnut on the outside but cold gelato within.

Gelatissimo Carlton owner Anthony Ursini said recent trials of the doughnut had been a success in the company’s Queensland and Sydney stores.
The gelato doughnut comes on the back of the Nutella doughnut craze, which led to a nationwide Nutella shortage.
Mr Ursini said he believed the gelato doughnut, which is selling for $5, would “take off”.
“We are expecting this to be one of the big things for summer,” Mr Ursini said.
“In Europe they are all doing it but here in Australia we are still in our infancy of making gelato.”
Mr Ursini has sampled the doughnuts and recommends a scoop of raspberry.
“It isn’t good on the hips but it is quite nice and it can get addictive,” he said.
Gelatissimo is on 197 Lygon St, Carlton, and Southland in Cheltenham.
