The Diamond Creek pub where teenager Patrick Cronin was tragically killed from a senseless coward punch has been damaged by fire.

The Windy Mile on Main Road, Diamond Creek has been damaged by fire.

A historic Diamond Creek pub, where teenager Patrick Cronin died from a senseless coward punch, has been damaged by fire.

CFA crews were called to the blaze at The Windy Mile, which has been closed for several years, at 11.30pm on Thursday, June 10.

The cause of the fire was not suspicious, with investigators determining an electrical fault was to blame, with the damage contained to the roof.

Diamond Creek Fire Brigade captain Peter Clarkson said when firefighters arrived, flames were coming out of the roof.

“But it only took about 10 minutes to get under control because (the fire) was only in the roof, it wasn’t anywhere on the floor,” he said.

Mr Clarkson said fire investigators attended the scene Friday morning and determined an electrical fault caused the fire.

The Diamond Creek Brigade took to Facebook to address rumours the fire may have been deliberately lit.

“While much discussion regarding the cause of this fire is available to read on public forums, we do not believe this fire was suspicious,” it wrote.

“There were no signs of arson or any other suspicious activity.”

Mr Clarkson said although he was no engineer, he didn’t believe the pub, which is about 100 years old, would have to be pulled down as a result of the fire, with the damage contained to the roof.

The well-known venue shut in 2019, after struggling to survive following Patrick Cronin’s death in 2016.

The owners previously told Leader they had plans to turn the venue into a function hall.
