After two years as Darebin mayor, councillor Kim Le Cerf said she was most proud of the leadership Darebin Council had shown on environmental and social justice issues.

Elected into her first term as a councillor in 2016, Cr Le Cerf ran for mayor unopposed and said her first task was to change the council’s reputation.

“It is a very different organisation to the one I walked into,” she said.

And while she has made her career in local and state governments, Cr Le Cerf said she “never imagined” what it would be like to be a councillor.

“The number-one thing I learned in the first six months is you will never be able to please everybody, there will always be someone who is unhappy with your decision,” she said.

Two issues the community had battled council over were the future of Preston Market and the future of council aged-care services and Cr Le Cerf admitted they had occupied the most of her time.

But she denied there were any transparency or confidentiality issues with the council.

“I wouldn’t say that we’re hiding a lot of stuff. If anyone asks me anything, I’ll tell them exactly what they want to know unless there’s some kind of legal reason why I can’t,” she said.

Cr Le Cerf will head back to work on December 4 and hoped to spend more time with her family.

The council elected councillor Susan Rennie as mayor for one year on November 26.

Councillor Susanne Newton was elected deputy mayor.
