WHEN it comes to helping others, the sky’s the limit for Dr Rosalie Hudson.

The mountain climbing friend of asylum seekers and the elderly has been recognised for her service to the community at the Senior of the Year Awards.

The Thornbury advocate, who has spent decades as a volunteer, nurse and teacher, said she was still surprised to receive the recognition.

For almost 20 years, Dr Hudson has chaired a support group for people with an acquired brain injury and raised money for Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

She has embarked on expeditions around the world to raise money including climbing Annapurna Mountain and the Inca Trail.

Dr Hudson also visited one refugee every fortnight for five years, even while they were in a detention centre.

“I believe very strongly if you can give significant and continued support to one person, you’re doing a fair bit for the whole cause,” she said.

Dr Hudson said helping those less fortunate was just part of “being a good neighbour” and she would keep doing charity work for as long as she had health and breath.

Dr Hudson said she had a focus on keeping herself fit and physically active and credits her twice weekly Zumba class as a main contributor.

She also credited fellow volunteers for inspiration.

“I’m very inspired hearing about other older people making direct contributions to society,” she said.

Dr Hudson received a Council of the Ageing Senior Achiever Award at the awards ceremony.
