Another major bank is leaving Diamond Creek, with the Commonwealth Bank branch to shut its doors.

It means the Bendigo Bank will be the last bank standing in the town, following the departure of several other big bank branches over the years.

The Commonwealth Bank branch on Chute St will close on June 25, after a decline in customer transactions.

Staff from the branch will be offered redeployment opportunities, with customers urged to conduct banking at the nearby Australia Post outlet, as well as online through the CommBank app and NetBank.

Commonwealth Bank regional general manager Nicole Rahme said following a recent review, it had made the difficult decision to permanently close the branch, which has had a 47 per cent drop in transactions over the past five years.

“Our people from the Diamond Creek branch will be offered redeployment opportunities, including roles supporting customers over the phone and online, or other comparable roles where it suits them,” Ms Rahme said.

The closest Commonwealth Bank branches are in Greensborough, Eltham and Plenty Valley.

Diamond Creek Traders Association president Claire Nolle said she was devastated the branch was closing.

“I bank with the Commonwealth; I’ve been banking there for awhile and for me, the fact I can easily go across there when I need assistance, it’s been a lifesaver,” she said.

“I know quite a few of the other businesses have said ‘We bank with the Commonwealth, and the fact they’re not going to be here anymore, we might look at changing (banks)’.

Nillumbik Council Mayor Peter Perkins said the loss of face-to-face banking in Diamond Creek would be a blow to the community, including local businesses.

“It’s surprising to me that a sizeable population of 17,000 people (in Diamond Creek) can’t have its own Commonwealth Bank,” Cr Perkins said.
